(2012)

"She Ain't About To Do That" is a song by French-British singer Beastette, which features British urban pop/hip-hop artist Aurora Reed as a guest on the track. The song was produced by Rusko and written by Beastette herself (credited by her real name Rachel-Nichelle Kesh), her sister Stephanie Kesh, and Aurora Reed who wrote and rapped the middle-eight portion of the song. The song was scheduled to be released as the lead single from Beastette's upcoming sophomore album Raynachelle on 2 July 2012 but was pushed back.

Lyrically a song about a girl who constantly rejects a guy's romantic/sexual advances, musically, the song is a departure from Beastette's signature indie pop sound as she experimented with hip-hop and R&B on this song, as with the rest of its parent album as well. The song received positive reviews from critics and fans who praised Beastette's transition into urban music, the "sassiness, sexiness, and somewhat sluttiness" of the song, and Reed's rap verse and presence.

Background[edit | edit source]

"She Ain't About To Do That" was written in November 2011 and recorded in March 2012 as apart of the sessions for Beastette's sophomore album Raynachelle. One month later, in April 2012, as the sessions of the album were about to end, Beastette decided that she wanted someone, besides herself, to rap a verse in the song. Interested in working with urban singer Aurora Reed, Beastette asked if Reed would be on the record in which Reed agreed to do. Though Reed was mainly a singer and had plenty of success in the UK at the time, she was gaining further notoreity as a rapper due to her mixtape aptly titled I'm A Singer, Not A Rapper. After hearing the mixtape, Beastette asked if Reed would be on the record. Reed wrote her verse in fifteen and recorded it in one take in mid-April 2012.

"She Ain't About To Do That" was apparently one of the first songs to be written for the album.

Writing and composition[edit | edit source]

"She Ain't About To Do That" was written by Beastette herself, along with her sister Stephanie Kesh. Aurora Reed wrote the rap portion in the middle-eight section of the song. The song lyrically speaks of how a girl who goes to a club to have fun when she is hit on and constantly pursed by a guy. For whatever reason, the girl doesn't like the guy and constantly turns him down saying "she ain't about to do that, no no." When saying "she" in the chorus, Beastette is referring to herself in the third person and is actually saying "I ain't about to do that". Beastette was inspired to write the song after watching her favorite reality television show in which one of the personalities on the show stated "she is not about to do that. Like...uh no!".

Musically, the song is a uptempo urban-inspired tune that incorporates elements of hip-hop, R&B, urban pop, and pop music. Produced by Rusko, the song was a departure from Beastette's usual alternative/indie pop sound that was prevalent on her debut album Wildfire and her EP Francais. The song begins with Beastette doing a little rap before she sings the verses and choruses. In the middle eight, Reed raps her verse before the song goes back to Beastette singing the final chorus. Beastette's sister, Stephanie, provides background vocals on the song. Reed is only heard on the rap and does not sing at all, as a featuring lead artist or on background vocals, throughout any part of the song.

Release and promotion[edit | edit source]

The song was to be released a single on 2 July 2012 in the UK and Ireland and also in other countries on the same day or later that week; in the United States and Canada, the single was to be released on 3 July 2012. The release of the single was briefly cancelled but has since been rescheduled for a late November 2012 release. The single will be released on CD single in the UK and Ireland only and will be released in the countries it will be released in on digital download. Other formats for the single have yet to be announced.

The single premiered on 22 May 2012 on the SPKTRM website, alongside with its promotional cover. On 28 May 2012, Beastette revealed the b-side for the single titled "Jameson Dominic" in which she described as a "lust track" directed towards Phoenix Rising member and pop singer James Moss. The title of the songs is derived from Moss' real name which he himself used for his solo debut album of the same name. With the song also making references to other singers such as Tyler, Taylor, Paulo Araujo, and Paolo from Dante, the song sparked minor controversy when towards the end of the song, Beastette alluded that she had slept with Moss and his fellow Phoenix Rising band member Victor Strong. Described musically as Beastetette briefly returning to her indie pop sound, the song received mixed reviews from critics; Moss made no comment about the track probably to avoid the somewhat predatory Beastette.

On 31 May 2012, Beastette performed "She Ain't About To Do That" on Live Lounge and also covered "C4 G4" by SPELLS and Reed herself; Reed was absent from performing the rap verse for the single and Beastette did an impromptu rap in place of Reed where she bragged about having relations with Moss and both of the members of SPELLS, Calvin Andrews (whom Beastette formerly collaborated with on "Have A Word"; Andrews was credited as TWISTED DISCO) and Brett [surname]. Beastette also revealed during the interview portion of the program that she and Moss had a one night stand at the Travelodge room where Beastette was living out of. Also during the end of her cover of "C4 G4" she shouted that she wanted to have a foursome between the members of SPELLS and Reed.

Artwork[edit | edit source]

The promotional cover for the single was revealed the same day the single premiered on 22 May 2012. The cover was simple with the names of Beastette and Reed, and the title of the track taking up the full cover against a cream background. All of the words came in different sizes so they could all fit the cover.

On 3 June 2012, the official cover art for the CD single format was revealed. It showed a picture of Beastette in black and white except for her lips which remained or were colored red. Beastette's name, the title, and the words "featuring Aurora Reed", were featured off to the side and were unaligned.

When the single was rescheduled to November 2012, Beastette announced that the single would have a new cover.

Reception[edit | edit source]

Critical reaction[edit | edit source]

The single received positive reviews from critics and fans alike who praised Beastette's new musical direction towards an urban sound, her "sassiness, sexiness, and somewhat sluttiness" on the track, and her vocal performance. Most of the praise, however, was directed at Reed's involvement and her rap verse in the middle eight with one critic calling it "pure fiyah [fire]".
