Sex Before Marriage Tour
(2012)

The Sex Before Marriage Tour was the third concert tour by Bella-May, whiched kicked off in the USA in April and in the UK on July 2nd 2012. It was Bella's first USA tour and her first arena tour in the UK. The tour is considered by some as a "Greatest Hits" tour as it saw Bella perform tracks from her first two albums and preview some new songs from her then-upcoming third studio album "Fifty Shades of May".

The tour was announced on December 24th 2011 and tickets went on sale on January 2nd. Bella's manager, Bruce Garfield, said the tour would feature a big production and plenty of new tracks. Wembley Arena was the first venue to sell out completley, selling all its tickets in 10 minutes of release. However, due to a tight schedule and doctors orders, Bella was refused permission to add extra dates, apart from a second date in Manchester due to the filming of the tour DVD.

The tour was originally going to be called the Eat My Cunt Tour, but Bella felt that the official title was more controversial and the thought of that tickled her tenders.

Development[edit | edit source]

In an interview with Heat! Magazine in January 2012 Bella claimed, for the US leg, she wanted to put on a performance that would make the attenders think "Wow. That was money well spent". She admitted that she wasn't exactly what you would call a "serious artist", lyrically however she did take her career very seriously. "I don't want people to see me as a joke. I wan't them to enjoy me" She also added:

"So I've been thinking about what to do, what to sing, how to perform it all. I'm pretty sure I'll perform a lot of songs from my second album, seeing as it is the one my fans prefer. I'll probably do all my singles too and one or two new tracks. And knowing me, I'll probably strip off or something! I don't have a massive budget for my US leg, so I just have to make the most of it."

Bella then added that she would be returning to the UK for the second leg of the tour and would be performing in Arena's around England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. She also emphasised that the tour was not just in support of the third album and gave some juicy details:

The UK leg or the "main" leg as I like to call it, is in support of my first 2 albums and a few tracks from my upcoming third one. I've chosen a nice selection of tracks from the first 2 and a handful from the new one and then a few covers to top it all off. I'm really proud of how it all seems to be coming together. I met with the tour director last week and we sat down and discussed how we wanted it all to be. I've had the stage designed and I'm seeing about outfits in the next few weeks. I will go into rehearsals for it in late May/early June. I can't wait! Arenas baby!"

Critical Reception[edit | edit source]

USA Gigs[edit | edit source]

The Florida Independent gave Bella's USA gig a terrible review and described it as "Rather tame. The US have already accepted Bella for who she is. She should have used this to her advantage and given us what we payed money for. Her terrible dancing and mediocre vocals were, obviously, below average. The material Bella sang was also very sub-par. Lyrically, they were genious. But as for the music, we've heard it all before!"

However, The Evening Paper gave it a much more positive review and said it was "Whacky, carefree fun! Bella showed off her fun and quirky personality and the songs she performed were outstanding, pushing boundries no other artist has dared to. She ventured into topics only thought of when one is 'touching' themselves... Bravo Bella! We can't wait for more".

Peter Robinson of Popjustice attended the Illanois gig and claimed it was "A great show if you were going for a night out on the piss. Unfortunatley, Miss May came accross as being rather amateur for someone of her star quality. Maybe it was just nerves? We will see once the Sex Before Marriage tour comes to the UK".

UK/Ireland Leg[edit | edit source]

The Mirror gave Bella's show an 8/10 star review. They said the singer put on a "spectacular show" and praised her for her incredible dance moves. They claimed the new tracks were "some of her best" but were left somewhat disappointed by her weak vocals. They ended their review with saying that tickets to the show was "money well spent".

The tour was also received extremely well by fans who claimed it was her "best tour yet". One fan commented on how a significantly larger effort had been put into this tour that her previous ones.
