"Pass Me By" is a song by Swedish pop trio Suede. The song was written by all of the members of Suede, produced by Shawn Middlesbrough, and was released as the third overall single from the band's debut album Today Is Our Day. It is the second single from the album to be released in the United States and Canada. In June 2012, the single was released in Sweden and Norway simultaneously with "Hovering". In the UK, and also Ireland, the single was to be released as a double A-side single with "Hovering"; plans for the release has since been postponed/cancelled.

To date, the single has reached #3 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and #2 on the Canadian Hot 100. It is their first charting single in the US and their first top five hit single in both countries. The single also became their second number one single on the US dance charts. It is considered to be their breakthrough hit in the US and Canada. The single has been certified double Platinum in the United States by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).

Composition[edit | edit source]

Produced by Alex Guadino, Steve Mac, and Shawn Middlesbrough, "Pass Me By" is an uptempo song that incorporates elements of dance pop, electronica, trance, synthpop, and accordion music. Lead singer Herman Chang stated that the single was one of the most "club-oriented tracks that we have ever done and its very trancey or trance-like even." Group member Lennart Bjorlin naturally stated that the single was "very very dancey! Yay!"

Release[edit | edit source]

"Pass Me By" was first released as a single digitally and to radio in February 2012 in the United States and Canada. It became their second single to be released in North America and was initially only released there. The trio and their management stated that should the single be successful in the US and Canada, they would consider on releasing the single elsewhere. After the success of the single, the trio announced that they would be releasing the single Sweden, Norway, Ireland, and the United Kingdom. In the UK, the single was supposed to be released as a double A-side single with "Hovering" and was penciled in for a release date of June 25, 2012 after initially being scheduled for release one week earlier on June 18, 2012. Shortly after the single's announcement, their management cancelled the release of the single in the UK and Ireland, a decision which angered the trio. Their management still decided to release "Pass Me By" in Sweden and Norway simultaneously with "Hovering" on June 4, 2012; it was released in Ireland on the same day.

Reception[edit | edit source]

Critical reaction[edit | edit source]

The single received positive reviews from critics and fans who praised the song's production and "catchy" lyrics.

Commercial performance[edit | edit source]

Expected to be a hit, "Pass Me By" still managed to exceed expectations in the US and Canada.

In the United States, the single debuted within the top forty on the Billboard Hot 100 and has since peaked at #3. It has also peaked at #1 on the Billboard Pop Songs chart and became their second number one single on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Songs chart as well. In Canada, the single peaked at #2. In Ireland, the single debuted and peaked at #1, becoming their first chart-topping single in that country. The single has sold over three million copies in the US and has been certifed 3x Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).

Music video[edit | edit source]

The music video to "Pass Me By" premiered in March 2012 on VEVO. The plot of the video was simplistic and features each of the members, in their own shot, dancing a somewhat sexually/romantically-charged choreographed dance routine with a female partner on a sound stage. Shots of the trio dancing together is also interspersed throughout the video. The video received positive to mixed reviews from its simplicity.
