"Let Them Go" is a song by Swedish pop trio Suede. Written by Suede and produced by Shawn Middlesbrough, the song was featured as the b-side to the group's debut single "See The Light". As with the theme of the b-sides to "See The Light", in which a group member solely took lead on vocals, Anders sang the song solely. "Let Them Go" is based off a previous song of theirs titled "I Release You" which they submitted for the Melodifestivalen 2011, where they made the finals but did not win. A Swedish version of the song, "Låt dem gå", was released as a single only in Sweden and made the top twenty there.

Background[edit | edit source]

"Let Them Go" is derived from a song called "I Release You", which was only written by Herman Chang. The song was submitted as Suede's entry into the Melodifestivalen 2011 contest and was sung in Swedish, despite being written and having its title in English (the lyrics were, of course, translated into Swedish). The group performed the song in the second semi-finals of the competition where they did not initially go through but were allowed to perform in the Second Chance round of the competition. Eventually "I Release You" made it through the Second Chance round and made into the finals. "I Release You" came in third in the Melodifestivalen 2011, being beaten out by "In This Club" by [Daniel] and "Popular" by [Derick Sade], which was the winning song and went on to represent Sweden at the 2011 Uravision Song Contest.

When it came time to record b-sides for their single "See The Light", the idea came up to have the members of Suede to record a song that each featured one of them singing sole lead vocals on a song. "I Release You" was "rehashed" and turned into "Let Them Go". Anders chose to take lead vocals on the song and ended up singing solo on the track since the other members of Suede did not want to sing on the track.

Though considered to be a "derivative" of "I Release You" since it had the same message in its lyrics, "Let Them Go" was still lyrically different in a sense. The lyrics to "Let Them Go" were said to be inspired by an album track by Arianna DiCorso from her album; "Let Them Go", as such, is considered to be an "answer song" to DiCorso's track.

"Let Them Go" was included on the third UK CD single for "See The Light".

"Låt dem gå", the Swedish version of "Let Them Go", was released as a single in 2012 and only in Sweden. Technically considered the second single from the Swedish version of Today Is Our Day and from the entire album overall, the single was another success for the group reaching #11 on the Sverigetopplistan, though it was not as successful as their previous single, "See The Light", which reached #4. The song, however, was a big radio hit in Sweden and received a lot of airplay there. The song was simultaneously released alongside with "See The Light" in Norway as well.
