"Girls" is the lead single from Caymon's first full length studio album (second major label album release), released on July 30th 2012. The track takes its own spin on modern day dance-pop mixed with R'n'B and elements of reggae. The song was written by Caymon and produced by Darkchild.
On Sunday, August 5th, "Girls" debuted at #5 on the UK singles charts, but rose to (and peaked at) #3 in it's second week.
Background[edit | edit source]
Originally, a track called "Bittersweet" featuring label-mate Bella-May was going to be released as the lead single to Riders of the Night. However, the schedule clashed as Bella was to tour the United Kingdom in July 2012, when the song was penciled in for release. Scrapping that choice, Fusion Records sent Caymon in for more studio sessions with American producer Darkchild and "Girls" was written, recorded and produced in just four days. Due to the summery feel of the track, it was chosen to be released as the album's lead single on July 30th 2012.
Composition[edit | edit source]
"Girls" was conceived in May 2012 after plans to release "Bittersweet" (Featuring Bella-May) fell through. Caymon went into the studio in Miami with American pop/R'n'B music producer Darkchild. Caymon spent some of his time lying by the poolside in his private villa. He said he considered the good weather, the pool, the fun to be a source of inspiration - he wanted to make a 'summer jam'. He began writing down lyrics and went through many scrap book pages before the final version of "Girls" was complete. He brought the lyrics to the song's producer, Darkchild, who began producing beats for the track Caymon had in mind. When the pair put their head together, the track as we know it today was born. It took a total of 4 days for the track to be completed. When at a meeting with Fusion Records, Caymon stated he made his mind up and wanted "Girls" to be the albums lead single. His team agreed with him and the campaign had begun.
The track avoids the normal verse/chorus/verse/chorus rhythm used in many modern pop songs. Instead, the song has a verse, a bridge, a second verse, a bridge and then a chorus. After the first chorus, we're given a middle 8, a final chorus and then an outro. Caymon said the reggae influences in the song were totally accidental and were only considered for the song when it was almost completed. Before that, it had a much more plain R'n'B feel to it.
Music Video[edit | edit source]
The music video was directed by Anthony Mandler and premiered on Caymon's VEVO account on Sunday July 22nd, 2012.
The video's beginning showed Caymon in a completely black room, where hands of females could be seen stripping him of his clothes. He then wakes up in bed next to two women who it's presumed the singer slept with the night before. He gets out of bed, gets dressed and heads out onto the street (where, strangely, it is already sunset) where a street party is taking place. Caymon break-dances, does some skateboarding, makes out with various girls and is also seen doing tequila shots with salt and lime. Towards the end of the video, he invites a girl into his car. They drive off. Once they are on an isolated road, Caymon pulls over to the side of the road and turns off the engine. He then gets on top of the girl and the pair smile. The camera pans out to show a final image of the car. What they do after that is left up to ones imagination.
