"What I Started" "American Pie" "Your Own Reflection (Echo)"

"American Pie" is a song performed by URAPS Idol 12 winner, Regina Harper. The track served as the lead single from her debut album "How Many Miles To Hollywood?" and was released on July 9th 2012 via Fusion Records. The single charted at #1 on the UK singles charts, #11 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #8 on the Canadian Hot 100.

Song Information[edit | edit source]

Regina claims she wrote the song in February 2012. At the time, she felt like she was struggling with the celebrity world and decided to express her thoughts in song. The song speaks about accepting what has happened as a result of your actions, american 'pie' being a spin on the American Dream. "When I wrote the song I didn't even expect it to be on the album, let alone become the lead single!" Said Harper in an interview with Capital FM.

Release and Reception[edit | edit source]

The single premiered on Regina's official website on June 2nd 2012. It received a mixed reaction. Popjustice said the song was "a solid 7/10" and that its chorus was "catchy, but not ground-breaking by any means". The Sun described the song as "boring with forgettable lyrics and a generic country melody". The Daily Star said the song was "perfect for summer" and gave it a score of 9/10.

Regina's fanbase praised the song. While it was not the hardcore rock they were expecting, they knew it was simply chosen as it was a "safe" first single and that they would get the rock songs on the album.

Music Video[edit | edit source]

The music video was shot in Miami Beach months before the track's release, in April 2012. It was directed by Ray Kay and took 1 day to complete.
The video begins with shots of Regina walking down the street of an extremely run-down area. She is wearing a long black dress, her hair is done and she is caked in make-up. As she walks, homeless people and others in need are seen around her, but she is oblivious to them. Towards the second verse, Regina removes her dress to reveal a white vest and blue denim shorts. She removes her make-up takes her hair out of a bun. Bit by bit, her surroundings become less run down. Towards the end of the song, Regina joins a band and begins singing the song while people come and watch her perform. The video ends with an old man offering Regina a slice of apple pie on a paper plate designed like the American flag.
