Reincarnation is the fourth album by Amy Marshall, to be released July 6, 2009. The album sees the singer and songwriter shy away from her usual rock sounds into a dance pop direction; the singles "Running With Scissors" and "Painkiller" from her previous album Morbid Lullabies provided a preview of what was to come from her fourth studio effort.

The album's first single, "Bang!", features Alesha and was co-written by Amy, Alesha, and Romo.

Reincarnation debuted at #1 on July 12, 2009, becoming Amy's second #1 album and first to debut at #1.

Background[edit | edit source]

Though Amy is best known for the rock sounds of her albums Peculiar Secret and Morbid Lullabies, she was always been interested in pop music. She first stepped outside her comfort zone to record a dance-pop song, "It Must Be Love", in 2005 with Danish disco diva Charlie C, and three years later collaborated with her again on a new version of her hit "Superstar". When Amy became romantically linked to Katrina Regalna of the pop group Horrorfilm Horizon, she revisited the idea of going pop and collaborated with the group on the single "Running With Scissors" in summer 2008; additionally, she utilized more poppy arrangements in the song "Trying To Keep Myself Sane" from the Morbid Lullabies re-release, and released a Xenomania remix of "Painkiller" as that album's closing single.

Songs[edit | edit source]

Romo mentioned in an interview two tracks she wrote for the album, "Quiet On The Set", which she said began with Amy forgetting lyrics and continued into a dance-pop shouting stomper, and "Why I Drink", a song that started with the intent to include on her album POPSTAR: The Life & Times Of Belle Ball and continued when Romo offered to work with Amy to revise it for her album, believing the lyrics were in some part inspired by Amy's feud with Esmeralda Dimuzio.

"The Metro" is a cover of the 80's hit by Berlin. "Who The Hell Are You (The Morning After)" is a re-recording of a song from INTOXICATED's second album Under The Influence.

Collaborations[edit | edit source]

Amy worked closely with Romo on the album, who wrote and co-produced several songs for the album and also sang background vocals. One of the songs she wrote was "Bang", the album's lead single, which featured a guest spot from Alesha. "The Good Girl" was written by Shell Ruin and co-produced by Ruin and Alesha, and "Fight For My Sympathy" was written by Elice Claire.

Twisted Disco wrote and produced "This Is My Church" and "Who The Hell Are You? (The Morning After)", the latter of which features guest vocals by TD vocalist Calvin Andrews.

Jack Stevens appears on the track "Eargasm Me", which was produced by Stevens' production team Knobfeelers. China wrote "Lover On My Lips" and guests on "Good Cop Bad Cop", both songs co-produced by Romo and Indigo Peak's Andre Cassenove. In addition to Andre's production, IP's Yannik McQueen was originally supposed to meet with Amy to contribute songwriting talents, but was unable to contribute due to business constraints.

Pop culture references[edit | edit source]

First single "Bang" slyly makes fun of Amy's early career and her Shit Awards "wins" in 2005, in the line "No, this ain't your senior year of high school Amy Marshall / I'll sweep you under the rug before I sweep another Shit Awards". She also makes reference to her feud with Esmeralda Dimuzio in 2007.

The song "Why I Drink" is about the Esmeralda feud. Romo's parts of the lyrics were taken from an unfinished song intended for her album POPSTAR: The Life & Times Of Belle Ball.

The intro to "Quiet On The Set" features Amy forgetting the lines to her #1 single "I Screwed It Up".

"Who The Hell Are You (The Morning After)" contains a reference to the song "Your Woman" by White Town, and incorporates elements of Jem's 2004 single "They".

Chart performance[edit | edit source]

On the heels of the success of "Bang!", Reincarnation debuted at #1 upon its July 2009 release, selling 80,774 copies in its first week. That gave Amy her best first-week sales for an album and second best overall albums sales week; her biggest, of course, was during Christmas week 2007 when her previous album Morbid Lullabies became the Christmas #1 album. Reincarnation has sold a total of 779,777 copies, enough to be certified platinum.
