"No One/Mood Swing" is the fourth single from Amy Marshall's debut album Amy Marshall. Despite its release being shrouded in controversy between an escalation of Amy's fight with GirlSound and a poor artwork campaign, the single became Marshall's first top 5 single and scored her biggest first-week sales at the time, a personal record that stood for nearly five years.

Song information[edit | edit source]

"No One" was written by Paul, about a boy who commits suicide. It was offered to Amy when she made a request for a last-minute replacement track for her debut album after she decided to scrap "Breaking Free" from the original track listing for not being good enough.

"Mood Swing" is a cover of a top 40 single by flopstar Tori Carter, whose management allowed for Amy to cover the song following Carter's sudden death. It was written by CeCe Winston, a pop song about a woman who thinks she's in love until she realizes her boyfriend never loved her, it was "just a mood swing".

The artwork[edit | edit source]

The distorted image of Amy blowing a bubblegum bubble on the CD1 cover art drew much attention from message boards and blogs; many thought it appeared that Amy was wearing a mustache on the cover.

A banner featuring two pictures of Amy - one in color, the other in black and white - behind an orange background with the tagline "What's your mood?" on top also was much-discussed. It was branded as one of the worst pieces of artwork Amy has designed; as a result it was named Worst Banner at the Shit Awards.

GirlSound feud[edit | edit source]

Amy became notorious during this era for her fights with the pop group GirlSound, to the point where the vast majority of the URAPS public were sick and tired of seeing them go at each other. Because of this, she wasn't sure who was supporting her and who was against her, so she had a tendency to unnecessarily lash out at anyone who said something unflattering towards her.

In the wake of Amy's infamous Shit Awards heart attack, another Shit Awards was held where once again Amy dominated. But she redeemed herself this time around by showing that she shouldn't take everything seriously. Her comments were positively received and immediately following that she promised to improve her public image, as well as her material, with her second album.

Chart performance[edit | edit source]

"No One / Mood Swing" debuted and peaked at #3 on the Urapopstar Top 40 Singles Charts on April 17, 2005, selling 93,459 copies in its first week, Amy's highest first-week sales at the time, a personal record that stood nearly five years, finally eclipsed by her second #1 single "Game Over!" which sold 94,603 in its first week. "No One/Mood Swing" sold a total of 196,035 copies and was certified silver.

The original "Mood Swing" by Tori Carter charted at #23 - twenty spots lower than where Amy's cover of the single charted - giving this single the distinction of being the first cover of a single released on Urapopstar to do better than the original. Since then, many other acts have earned covers of Urapopstar singles that did better than the original, most notably DAMNED's #1 version of Veronica's Science's "Taking Back Venus".
