"Top of the World" is the debut single from British/Irish girlband Ace Rejects and the first single from their debut album Shattered Dreams. It was released on Monday 27 December 2010. It was written by Ace Rejects and Genevere Johnson. It made its debut at No.10 in the charts, but peaked at No.7 a week later. It also reached No.1 in the Download Chart. It sold 224,567 copies.

Background[edit | edit source]

Initially, the group were going to go with album track "Boyz" as their debut, but their management at Rejectum decided to go with "Top of the World" instead. The record company also decided to rush release the single since the band were achieving more notoriety during this time. Ace Rejects wrote the majority of the single, but the record company brought in Genevere Johnson to help write a more coherent structure for the song. There is a demo circulating with the original version.

Release and Reception[edit | edit source]

Ace Rejects announced that the single would be released on 27 December 2010 after their management wanted an early release instead of January. Initial reception for the single was positive. Many commentators picked up on the feel-good and "high" feeling of the song, with one reviewer from The Guardian commenting that it could be "an Idol song". Critics also enjoyed the beat to the song and called it "majorly catchy." Negative reception came from NME who argued that the song lacked depth of character and could be easily recorded by any other girlband. Q also commented on this idea, but said the fact that the public knew Ace Rejects had far more of a personality "saved the song and possibly their careers".

Music Video[edit | edit source]

The video opens with the girls on closeup. Throughout the first verse and the bridge, the girls are shown walking down a back street somewhere in London. Initially, the video was meant to be shot in Los Angeles, but the recording company that was due to film the video for the band went bust, so they had to re-film the video in London on a smaller budget.

The video mainly centres on the perceived female dominance that Ace Rejects bring. They are seen walking through the backstreets of London, and then also on a rooftop in London. They are also seen hijacking a car and tying a man to the rooftop of a car. The video received some complaints from car safety experts and also the fact that it showed the girls hijacking a car. One reviewer commented "It's not very ladylike is it?!"
