(2011) Sparks (2011) Is This A Dream? (2011)

Sparks is the fifth song and fourth single to be released from Ace Rejects' debut album Shattered Dreams. It is due to be released on 8 August 2011. The track was written by URAPS Idol winner Sienna Martinez for the band. It is a pop song that was produced by Steve Mac. It achieved favourable reception from music critics when first heard. It charted at Number 2 in the UK charts and in the Top 10 across Europe.

Background[edit | edit source]

Sparks was forwarded to the band via URAPS Idol winner Sienna Martinez. Martinez forwarded the track to the band after their record company were seeking written pop songs. The track details how a girl feels that Sparks are initially flying between her and a man and how she believes something can happen for the both of them. It has a pure pop sound to it's instrumental which provides a more upbeat measure to the song.

The song was chosen as a single when the band ran a competition for fans to choose the fourth single. It defeated the other choices, most notably fan favourite Boyz.

Critical Reception[edit | edit source]

Critics have generally praised the track. Many critics have applauded the lyrics to the song, calling them "true pop at its very best!". Many critics said it was a fine example of Martinez's apitude as a solo artist and song writer. The production was also praised. However some critics were not as happy with the song, annoyed that the band had included a pure pop song amongst more electro vibe songs on their debut album and thought it harked back to 90s girlband territory.

Music Video[edit | edit source]

The music video was shot in America whilst the band were filming the videos for The Game and You Want What?! Even though the single hadn't been decided at that point, the band members still eventually wanted to release the song as a download only or proper single, so still felt the need to record a video for it.

The video starts off with the beat starting and the three girls shown in a silhouette form. As the beat gets closer to the first verse, the camera zooms in closer onto the three figures.

As the first verse begins, the camera focuses on Kelly for her verse. She is seen dancing firstly with the other girls and occasinly the camera focuses solely upon her. She is also shown surrounded by two men in leather and eye makeup. The camera focuses on her solely as she delievers her lines.

When the song comes to Ama’s bridge, the camera changes its focus from a group shot of the girls in silhoulete form against a white circle, to Ama being surrounded by two males in leather. She is bumping n grindin on them cause shes cool innit. By the end of the bridge, she is sitting in a reverse cowboy position on one of the males, with the other standing above her...obvz eye level meeting crotch.

As the chorus begins, we see the girls in a more colourful section. They seem to be trapped in a box. Obviously symbolising being trapped in a box full of emotions over a boy. So philosophical. So Jean Paul Sartre. The camera mainly focuses on Nicola on this one with her lovely blondish hair showing. The camera also pans back to the girls being shown wearing all white costumes at times with light sabre thingys fending off boys etc.

Nicola’s verse begins. She is seen covered in a more veiled setting; She seens her verse mainly with these kind of shots. Occasional flashes of a hunkish figure looking strangely like Laurent is also seen, with her attempting to reach for him on the other side of the veil. However at times, the action switches back to group shots of the band in the silhoulette tunnel.

Ama’s bridge begins again. This time she is seen with a male standing behind her. She is about to throw down the sabre thingy and admit defeat etc. But he pulls her closer to him again and kisses her.

The action switches back to group shots for this segement. The girls are again all shown in white. They have the males dancing closer to them this time and instead of fighting them off they attempt to guide them towards them more with their lighty things. The action also shows random trannies in the video. Obviously Ama’s random doing to show she cares

The middle 8 now comes and the girls are shown in more group shots. Silhouettes are so 2011. Again they are shown in the weird circle things with more figures all squished together. There are also single shots shown off the leather men dancing.

The song then changes into its final chorus. The girls are shown back in their colourful box thing. They are again shown in white doing their dance routine along with images of the girl behind the veils with the men closing in on them. Random shots are also shown of the men in silhoulette with the final shot similar to the beginning and the camera panning out.
