"Hovering"
(2012)

"Hovering" is a song by Swedish pop trio Suede. Written by all of the members of Suede and produced by Scottish DJ Calvin Harris, "Hovering" was released as the fifth and final overall single from the trio's debut album Today Is Our Day in June 2012. The song was initially supposed to be released in the UK as a double A-sided single with "Pass Me By" but plans for the single release were ultimately postponed and are said to be possibly scrapped in favor of a different song choice as the single. "Hovering" was instead released outside of the United Kingdom and in some countries was simultaneously released alongside with "Pass Me By". A Swedish version of the song, "Vakar över mig", was also released alongside the English version in Sweden and Norway.

To date, "Hovering" has proved to be a big international hit for the trio as it has reached the top ten in Canada, Ireland, the United States, and Norway, where it is their first top ten hit single in that country. In Sweden, the single peaked at #27.

Composition[edit | edit source]

The song, which was produced by Calvin Harris, is an uptempo dance pop song that incorporates elements of dubstep. After every chorus, the song has a "breakdown" of sorts. The song has a verse which is repeated three times in its respective turn (ultimately becoming the second and third verse as well) and is sung by a different member of the group. The choruses are also sung by a different member as well until the end where all three sing the pre-chorus and chorus in unison. Herman first begins the song by singing the verse and chorus before the exact structure of the song is repeated by Lennart and then Anders. Then all three sing the pre-chrous and the chorus before Herman sings the verse once again.

Release[edit | edit source]

"Hovering" was supposed to be released as a double A-sided single with "Pass Me By" in the United Kingdom. Their manager wanted to build on the success of "Pass Me By" but the trio also wanted to release "Hovering" which resulted in a compromise to release both as a AA single. Originally scheduled for a release date of June 18, 2012 and then later pushed back a week to June 25th, the single was postponed by their manager shortly after the single premiered on the Eargasm website and radio on June 3rd. The decision to postpone the single was already rumored to be happening even before the single premiered and when it was postponed, it angered the trio. To make it up to them, and already possibly knowing that the single was going to postponed before it officially was, their manager decided to release "Hovering" as a single in Sweden, Norway, Ireland, the United States, and Canada on June 4 and June 5, 2012, just a one or two days after the single premiered on Eargasm and radio in the UK. In Sweden, Norway, and Ireland, the single was released simultaneously with "Pass Me By", while in the United States and Canada, "Hovering" was released on its own. In Sweden and Norway, both the English and Swedish version of the song was released.

It is unknown when the song will be released in the UK or if it will be released at all. It is speculated that plans to release the song at all will be scrapped in the UK in favor of a different song choice for single.

Reception[edit | edit source]

Critical reaction[edit | edit source]

The single managed to get positive reviews regarding the song's melodic structure and its simplistic lyrical form. Many critics and fans felt that the song was "very catchy".

Commercial performance[edit | edit source]

"Hovering" debuted at #43 in on the Sverigetopplistan in Sweden and eventually peaked at #27. In Norway, the song performed better where it peaked at #8, ultimately becoming their first top ten hit in the country. In Ireland, the single debuted and peaked at #8 but stayed in the top ten for three weeks.

In the United States, the single debuted within the top twenty on the Billboard Hot 100 and quickly reached the top ten, where it has since peaked at #8. The single has also reached #8 on the Billboard Pop Songs chart and has become their third number one single on Billboard Hot Dance Club Songs chart. The single also suprisingly crossed over onto the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart where it has peaked at #68, becoming their first single to make it on that specific chart. In Canada, on the Canadian Hot 100, the single peaked at #6. In Ireland, the single peaked at #8.

Music video[edit | edit source]

The music video to "Hovering" was said to be shot in April or May 2012. Responding as to why the video was shot so early, the boys stated that they knew that song would be released as a single sometime in the future and decided to do a video for it. The video premiered on June 7, 2012 on VEVO.

The music video to the song is very simplistic and features shots of the boys dancing a very choreographed dance routine all throughout the video. Close up shots of the boys are also dispersed throughout the video as well.

The video has received positive reviews from critics and fans who complimented the choreography of the video. Some critics also stated that the video was "very, if not somewhat, sexy".
