"Down My Throat" is a collaborative single by urban singer/rapper Afrika Rose and porno-pop singer Lucas Brandt, recorded and released for the 2012 Tango Challenge. The single ranked in third place, behind challenge winners Ghetto Ginge (made up of Sienna Martinez and Aimee Lyons) who charted at #1, and runners-up No Little Thing and Kazimiera, who charted at #5. The single did not perform as well as Afrika's debut single "Speakers Bled Dry", but to-date is Lucas' biggest chart hit.

Background[edit | edit source]

Lucas Brandt began preparing his album in early 2012, and decided to enter the Tango Challenge as his means of leading the album. He was paired up with urban artist Afrika Rose, and together the duo worked with producer RedOne to craft their single. The goal was to bring together their musical styles - rap from Afrika, and dance from Lucas - and "Down My Throat" was the result, featuring rapped verses by both Afrika and Lucas over a pop/dance production, with dirty lyrics about partying (Lucas' porno-pop influence). It was the lead single from Lucas' album "World War Sex", but it is currently believed that if it is to feature on Afrika's album "The Unexpected" at all, it will be only as a bonus track. Afrika taught Lucas how to rap for the song, as he did not originally have the ability to do so properly. A music video was shot for the single, but remains unreleased for reasons unknown. Also unreleased is a solo b-side by Afrika Rose; the intention was for each duet partner to contribute their own song to the single as b-sides, but only Lucas' song, a cover of "Everything" by former gay pornstar-turned-singer Colton Ford was present on the release.

Reception[edit | edit source]

Upon the reveal of the partnerships for the challenge, Afrika and Lucas were considered ones to watch out for. The song was well-received as a dance anthem, and many praised Afrika's contribution to the song even while Lucas' rapping was laughed at. Public interest was high, as the song became a decently-large airplay hit and a moderate sales hit - Lucas' best on both counts, although for Afrika, "Speakers Bled Dry" outperformed it.

Music Video[edit | edit source]

The music video for "Down My Throat" was filmed, and was reported to be very colourful. However, the single was released without a video to accompany it, and the video was shelved for reasons unknown.

Chart Performance[edit | edit source]

In the early stages, Afrika and Lucas were dark horse contenders to win the challenge, but after Afrika did not promote as desired and Lucas spent more time promoting his album instead, their estimation decreased. Many still saw them as contenders for the top 5 but at release time they bubbled just under to debut at #6, placing them third in the challenge with opening sales of 59,054 copies. The song did not sell as well as "Speakers Bled Dry" for Afrika, nor did it peak as high; but it is Lucas' biggest chart hit matching the #6 peak of previous single "Hypersonic / Sex-Mas", and outselling it to become Lucas' biggest seller to date. Again, it was not as big a digital seller for Afrika as its predecessor, but for Lucas it is his best individual seller, and second-best digital seller overall when both halves of Lucas' previous single are combined. The single is also Lucas' biggest airplay hit, spending several weeks in the top 10 with a #7 peak, and having major longevity on the chart.
